In 1929, the Great Depression had just begun, making more difficult Richard Rogers' always-challenging task of keeping his family fed on sharecropper's wages. He decided to take his sisters, Ruby and Dovie, along with Ruby's children, Della Raye and Frank Jr., to live at the Partlow State Asylum for Mental Deficients in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Della Raye was a normal, intelligent child. The lie it took to get Della Raye into the institution -- that she was seven when in fact, she was only four -- would contribute to her repeatedly failing the IQ tests that might have released her, but even so, where would she have gone? For twenty years, Della Raye would be subjected to various forms of abuse and neglect that might have caused a lesser person to give up. Undaunted by those who often told her she would never amount to anything, that she was incapable of learning beyond the simplest of tasks, and that she would never live outside Partlow, Della Raye continued to fight to be treated with respect. In a bizarre twist of fate twenty years after she first entered Partlow, Della Raye was released with no money, no education, and only a small paper sack of possessions and told she was never to live in Tuscaloosa again. She worked hard, but her difficulties were not ended with her release. Eventually, she educated herself, married and raised a family, and managed her own business. Della Raye lives in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, where she enjoys visits with the sick, church activities, and social outings with friends. She also enjoys visiting with her six children and many grandchildren.
